Easy Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

I’m not sure that there is a more quintessential summer dessert than ice cream. When the weather gets warm and the nights stay bright long into the evenings, I find myself craving a bowl of ice cream while watching the sunset.

I have a few ice cream recipes that I rotate through each summer season, including this ever popular strawberry ice cream, this blueberry cheesecake ice cream, and this mint chocolate chip ice cream pie.

While I love a custard based ice cream that gets churned in an ice cream maker, there really isn’t anything easier than a no churn ice cream recipe, and this cherry ice cream is no exception. No churn ice cream recipes are slightly softer in consistency, which makes them incredibly creamy in texture.

Made with fresh black cherries, dark chocolate chips, and a combination of heavy whipping cream and sweetened condensed milk, this chocolate chip cherry ice cream screams summer and sunshine.

Reasons To Make This Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Right Now:

  • Fresh Cherries: I am a sucker for cherry season and I buy far too many fresh black cherries during this time of the year. Apart from snacking on them, I love baking with them because they are so sweet and have such a great texture.
    • If you love cherry garcia ice cream, you are going to love this dreamy homemade cherry ice cream with dark chocolate.
  • No Churn: No churn ice cream recipes are so simple. They have a slightly softer consistency than churned custard ice cream, but there is nothing simpler than whisking all the ingredients together and waiting for it to freeze.
  • Chocolate Chips: I like to use dark chocolate chips in this cherry ice cream, but you can use milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, mini chocolate chips, or even white chocolate. The rich dark chocolate pairs so well with the fresh cherries.

How To Make No Churn Cherry Ice Cream With Chocolate Chips

  • Fresh Cherries: Pit cherries and cut them into fourths. Mix sugar and cherries together. Place half of the cherries in a blender (or a food processor) and blend until smooth. Set cherry puree and remaining sugared cherries aside.
  • Whipped Cream: With a standing mixer or hand mixer, whisk heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form. Add in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Whisk until stiff peaks form.
  • Puree: Pour in sweetened condensed milk and cherry puree into the whipped cream. Gently fold the puree and sweetened condensed milk into the whipped cream until all the puree and sweetened condensed milk is combined.
  • Cherries and Chips: Lastly, add in the remaining cherries and chocolate chips and stir together.
  • Freeze: Pour the ice cream into a loaf pan (or a freezer safe container) and cover with plastic wrap. Freeze for 6-8 hours before eating.

Storage Tips:

Because it is an ice cream recipe, this homemade cherry ice cream needs to be stored in the freezer. I prefer to store homemade ice cream in a loaf pan with plastic wrap, but you can store it in an ice cream container or any freezer-safe airtight container.

Can I Use Frozen Cherries To Make Cherry Ice Cream?

While you can use frozen cherries in ice cream, I highly recommend using fresh cherries. Fresh cherries have a really good texture that frozen cherries have lost during the freezing process.

Plus, frozen cherries hold a lot more liquid (due to the freezing process), which can change the consistency of the ice cream.

Final Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Tips and Tricks:

  • Sugar: Due to the sweetened condensed milk, this is a sweet cherry ice cream. If your cherries are very sweet and ripe, you can reduce the amount of added sugar in the ice cream recipe. It’s up to your flavor preference.
  • Fold: Make sure you gently fold the sweetened condensed milk and cherry puree into the whipped cream. We want to keep as much volume of the whipped cream as possible.
  • Chocolate Chips: I like to use dark chocolate because dark chocolate cherry ice cream is incredible. However, you can use milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chips, mini chocolate chips, white chocolate chunks, or even omit the chocolate all together.
  • Almond Extract: I am a big believer in almond and cherries together, but if you don’t have almond extract, you can replace it with more vanilla extract.

Notes

*Depending upon your sweetness preference, you can reduce the amount of sugar in this recipe. Both the cherries and sweetened condensed milk are already sweet, and they will naturally add sweetness to the ice cream. If your cherries are exceptionally sweet, I suggest mixing only 1/4 cup of sugar in with the cherries.
**Almond extract pairs very well with black cherries, but you can omit this and instead use more vanilla extract.
