Lucky Charm Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
I think it’s safe to say most people would concur the best part of a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal is the colorful marshmallows. They’re different shapes and colors, and easy one is as magically delicious as the next. It’s not a cereal I buy often anymore when I’m at the grocery store, but it is one that is incredibly nostalgic and I love having it in the pantry this time of year.
I adore a classic Rice Krispie Treat, because it’s easy to make, full of gooey marshmallows, and has a near perfect texture. Leading up to St. Patty’s Day, I love taking the traditional marshmallow cereal bar and giving it a magical spin by transforming them into Lucky Charms Rice Krispies Treats! I love festive recipes and this is such a delicious way to give something a fun twist that is still an easy recipe you can whip up in a few minutes.
These cereal treats use only a handful of ingredients, are soft and gooey, and so bright and colorful! I love this recipe because it calls for both rice cereal and lucky charms, which gives these gooey lucky charms treats a really good texture. An easy dessert for St. Patrick’s Day!
Lucky Charms Marshmallow Treats Ingredients:
You only need 5 ingredients to make these Rice Krispie Treats with Lucky Charms Marshmallows! Such a simple and nostalgic treat!
- Unsalted Butter: I love using unsalted butter in my baking recipe because I can control the salt content.
- Mini Marshmallows: While you can use large marshmallows, I find mini marshmallows melt quicker. The quicker you have melted marshmallows, the quicker you have marshmallow bars!
- Rice Cereal: You can use Rice Krispies Cereal or any rice cereal you have on hand to make these rice crispy treats!
- Lucky Charms Cereal: In these marshmallow treats, we use both the cereal and the marshmallows in Lucky Charms.
- Vanilla Extract: This is an optional ingredient, but I love adding vanilla extract to cereal treats! It really brings out the marshmallow flavor.
How To Make Lucky Charms Treats Homemade:
- Melt: In a large pot or large saucepan, melt butter over medium-low. Once the butter is melted, add in the mini marshmallows and stir until they are melted.
- Cereal: Remove the marshmallow mixture from the heat and stir in rice cereal, Lucky Charms cereal, and extra marshmallows. Stir until combined.
- Pan: Line a baking dish with parchment paper and press the rice crispy treats into the pan in an even layer.
- Pro Tip: Wet your hands with warm water and then press the cereal mixture into the pan. The warm water prevents the cereal mixture from sticking to your hands. You could also spray your hands with baking spray, but warm water is my favorite way to do it.
- Optional: If you want to, you can add some extra lucky charms marshmallows to the tops of the lucky charms treats. For best results, just press them marshmallows in a bit so they will stick.
- Set: Allow the bars to set up before serving. They can sit at room temperature to set up, or you can put them in the fridge to set up faster. Whether you serve them as room temperature or straight from the fridge, you still have delicious cereal bars either way!
Storage Tips:
You can store these Lucky Charms Rice Crispy Treats in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge. Additionally, you can keep them in the baking pan and cover the pan well with plastic wrap.
Pan Size:
Use a 9×9 square pan is you want really thick marshmallow rice krispies treats, or you can use a 9×13 pan for slightly thinner ones.
Variations:
- Lucky Charms Marshmallows: If you want to strictly use the marshmallows from a box of lucky charms instead of the cereal, you can use all rice cereal and just add in the marshmallows.
- White Chocolate: You can dip these in melted white chocolate or dark chocolate. It adds an extra bit of sweetness and flavor to these lucky charms bars.
- Rice Cereal: Want to make these delicious treats extra special? Use fruity rice cereal (think fruity pebbles) or chocolate rice cereal!
- Marshmallows: I love using classic mini marshmallows but you can use different kinds of marshmallows in these lucky charms rice cereal treats, like colorful ones or flavored ones.

- Pistachio Pudding Cream Pie
- Pistachio Cupcakes with Honey Cream Cheese Frosting

Best Baking Tips:
- More Marshmallows: I think the best way to make rice krispies is with extra marshmallows–both melted marshmallows and whole marshmallows mixed in with the cereal.
- Warm Water: Wet your hands with warm water and then press the lucky charm treats into the pan. The warm water prevents your hands from sticking to the treats.
- Texture: If you want them to be soft and gooey, don’t “pack” them into the pan. Press lightly to form them into an even bar shape, but don’t press so hard they get packed together too much. If you like a really chewy one, then pack them into the pan!
- Cereal: I find that making these with only Lucky Charms makes for soggy cereal. Make sure you follow the recipe and use both Rice Krispie Cereal and Lucky Charms Cereal.
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 7 cups mini marshmallows (about 1 1/3 10oz bags)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 5 cups rice cereal, like rice krispies
- 1 1/2 cups lucky charms
- 1/4 cup lucky charms marshmallows, optional
- Line a 9×9 baking dish or a 9×13 baking dish with parchment paper.* Set aside.
- In a large pot or saucepan over medium-low heat, melt butter.
- Once melted, add in 5 1/2 cups of mini marshmallows (1 entire 10oz bag), and stir over med-low heat until just melted and smooth. Remove from the heat.
- Add in the vanilla extract and mix together.
- Finally, add in the rice cereal, lucky charms cereal, and remaming 1 1/2 cups of mini marshmallows (about 1/3 of a 10oz bag). Mix until combined.
- Gently press the rice krisipie treats with lucky charms into your prepared baking dish into an even layer.**
- Pro Tip: Wet your hands or a rubber spatula with warm water and then press the rice krispie treats into the pan. This prevents the treats from sticking to your hands (or spatula).
- If desired, press the remaining 1/4 cup of lucky charms marshmallows into the top of the bars.
- Allow the treats to set before cutting them into bars. You can leave them at room temperature or refrigerate them.
*Use a 9×9 pan for thicker treats. Use a 9×13 for thinner treats.
**If you press the treats too hard into the pan, they will be very tough and chewy so you want to press gently.
